Solitary temple painting

During the Song Dynasty (960-1279) on shan shui (Chinese landscape painting) reached an exceptional development. The Taoist idea that man is but a tiny presence in the vastness of the cosmos inspired the painters of the time, especially during the Northern Song period (960-1127). Such is the quantity and quality of the landscapes of this period it should be considered as one of the golden ages of landscape painting of all time, along with Impressionism or seventeenth-century Dutch landscape painting.
