Gu Kaizhi is often regarded as the creator of traditional Chinese painting. Painter, poet and calligrapher, he wrote three books on theory of painting that marked deeply Chinese painting through the ages. As for his paintings, survive three, who have come to us through copies: “The wise and benevolent women,” the spectacular “Admonitions of the governesses of the Palais des Dames” is preserved in the British Museum, and the poetic “Nymph of Luo River”, shown here.
